duties are entirely distinct from Mr. HAZELAND'S. The Governor proposed to increase his salary to $720 which Lord KIMBERLEY in the 4th paragraph of his despatch declined to sanction on the ground that Mr. HAZELAND had received an increased salary for was assisting in the Registrar's Office, but in the 9th paragraph seems to have approved of with hesitation. Mr. HAZELAND's duties are in the Summary Court. Mr. BARROS has to assist the Registrar in various ways such as copying letters, circulars &c., taking charge of boxes, effects, &c. Mr. ACKROYD writes “A clerk in the Registrar's office is absolutely necessary, without him the Registrar, whether acting as such or as Official Assignee or Official Administrator, would have to perform all the smallest details, copy every letter or note, and attend to every application to see documents &c. I do not think," he says, "the necessity of a clerk in the Registry can be questioned. There is in the office a great deal to do for a clerk besides copying, keeping up indexes, looking for documents, arranging papers which would otherwise take up the time of a Deputy Registrar who ought to be free for the performance of the more important duties of his office." So far as I am able to judge, I consider Mr. BARROS absolutely essential and fully deserving of the increase of pay which I hope His Excellency the Administrator will see his way to granting him from the date of receiving the despatch.
